my coupon shopping this week...

ahhh, finally!  It has been awhile since I have done some serious coupon shopping.  Not that this is a TON of food or anything, but I still count it as a major coupon trip as I used coupons and sales for everything!
Oh!  I forgot to add in the shopping bag that came free with my Quaker purchases!  I think it is adorable and as we only use cloth grocery bags now, it will come in quite handy.

Our Albertsons did a double coupon deal.  I was able to use 4 double coupon coupons!  This made my granola bars .50 and the lipton Asain Sides (GREAT with broccoli) .25.  Funny, I got better deals on the other items without double coupons!  The beans were 10 for $10 and I used $1/1 coupons, I had a free soup coupon and the coffee creamers plus can of store brand coffee (eeew) was .50 total!

All said and done I spent $2.42.

Bringing Back Celery.

Is this in your fridge??  Don't toss it out!

How often do you buy celery only to use two stalks and discover a week later that it has turned limp.  Now what to do?  Sure, you can cut it up and toss it in soup.  But, why not just revive it and start over?

Cut the bottom 1/2 inch or so off the celery and place it in a glass of cool water.  Place in fridge and check it after 24 hours.  It should have 'drank' some of the water and come back to life!

Yeah!  Its just that easy.

My favorite Veg Cookbooks

I am asked all the time where I find good vegetarian recipes.  I thought it might be fun to post a list of my favorite books and websites.  I mainly cook vegan.  If I am going to put energy into something, Im going to do it right and not load it with extra fat, calories and other stuff that wont keep our bodies at optimal health and feeling great.

Oh, and just for fun, maybe I'll post some corresponding Amazon advertisements on the side here to make it easier if any of you are interested in making a purchase!!  I recommend the used versions, shipping is the same unless you spend over $25 on new books.  (hint:  click on the used price otherwise it will take you to the brand new, higher priced book)

I know, I know, such a shameless way to make a buck.   I have bills to pay too!  ;-)

My favorite books:

My favorite Crockpot book is Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker by Robin Robertson.  All of the recipes are really easy to prepare and always good and very healthy, generally low in fat.

One book I have relied on for years for simple and even more complex tofu recipes is Tofu Cookery by Louise Hagler.  I use many of her base recipes all the time, my meatloaf if a version from this book.

I really enjoy anything by John or Mary McDougall.  They keep things very, VERY simple and the recipes are the ultimate package if you want to loose a few pounds or just stick to a very healthy, low fat, no sugar diet.

I was given a wonderful book from a California restaurant called The Real Food Daily, by Ann Gentry, cookbook as a gift.  I have only made a few items in it, as they are more complex in preparation, but they are by far the very best vegan foods I have ever eaten.  She uses some atypical ingredients in her foods for the most amazing results.

My mother has Fast Cooking in a Slow Cooker and I have copied many really great recipes from it!  I really need to get my own copy I guess!

Some of my favorite Recipe Websites are:

FatFree.com:  their site is a little 'basic', but I always find what I want there.  I would guess almost half of their recipes are vegan, the rest vegetarian.

The Post Punk Kitchen is just a kick to visit.  All vegan and very funky!

I really like Vegan Mania.  They don't have a ton of recipes, but everything I've made there was good!

I actually use the Morning Star Farms recipes on occasion when I want to 'not cook' and just fancy up some prepared goods.

I have just recently found Fat Free Vegan and have bookmarked a few things.  I have yet to try them yet, but they are making me hungry!!

I also used to subscribe to Vegetarian Times, my subscription recently ran out and I've gotta renew again.  They always have TONS of wonderful, seasonal recipes in them. (and good coupons, too!)

Happy Cooking!

and the winner is...

Lucky number Seven won my Sweet Sydney Bean soap giveaway! I appreciate all the wonderful suggestions, advice and kind comments, thanks guys!  I will do my best to fulfill these!

So, what did Rachael from Beans and Rice win??  She won a Parfait gift set containing one of my cupcake soaps and a matching lotion.  Both pure and natural without any preservatives so she can even feel good about using them on her girls!

I am also going to throw in my favorite Summer Lemon Organic soap bits, as I know she is a cloth diapering momma too!  Actually, these are wonderful for all child cleaning needs.  Just drop one in a cup of hot water, let dissolve and transfer to a storage container.  Many moms keep the formula in a spray bottle to spray on baby bottoms or clean cloths for safe and easy clean up after meals!

(I actually keep some small cloths pre-moistened in a wipes container in my kitchen drawer, cleanup could not be easier!!)

I know I don't advertise my giveaways very well, so just keep a close eye out for my next one!

And, for everyone who is interested in trying my products or purchasing a gift from my Sweet Sydney Bean shop I will offer a 20% discount on anything purchased through the end of the month!!  Just type in 'Blog Discount' and I will manually adjust on your bill before finalizing!!

Tackle It Tuesday!

Over the past 2 weeks I have been very busy working on various project around the home.  My two 'tackle it tuesday' projects got thrown aside while I got distracted with other projects.

Here are my before and afters.  Its nice to be able to use our bulletin board again!

I also bagged up the rest of the clothes and toys our daughter just grew out of and those are going to storage for now.

Next week the changing table should be out of the pictures!!  She hasn't let us 'hold her down' to change her in probably 6 months or so.   She prefers standing!

I am going to find another place to put her diapers, her many, many big bulky cloth diapers!  And her wipes warmer.  I also plan to finish painting the trim in her and her closet door.   The home we just moved into was only pre-owned for a 'brief' time (3-4 years?) and the previous owners didn't get a chance to finish everything.    We have a lot of projects ahead of us for the next couple of weeks in order to complete her room!  I am excited and will post more pictures of what we 'tackle' next week!!

Does anyone have any big projects they are tackling this week?

Costco tomato cans last week.  I'll then put this in jars and freeze!

Sunday
Leftover Black Bean soup

Green salad

groceries;
fresh cilantro
canned chili?

baking day!

Sometimes I get this bug to just be really domesticated all day.  I do think it must be hormonal.  Primal, even.  Maybe....  oh, I won't get into it!

Here's what I made!

Oreganato bread sounded good, next time I will add a tsp or so of sweetener.  Dorky name, huh?  Mr. Roboto anyone?

To put on our bread I made some Better Butter.  It is fantastic!!  I really was surprised, just like margarine! I had no idea how easy it would be to make our own 'butter'!

Although, unlike butter or margarine, it is free of chemicals, hormone filled dairy or any hydrogenated oils, so it was safe for the little one to eat!  Yippee Skippee!

Tofu Banana Pudding was super easy and contains no sugar or added fat!!  and its really good!  I think she likes it!  (look, I think she actually got some in her mouth  :-)

My favorite healthy oatmeal cookies.  Very low sugar and fat free!  It makes cookies for breakfast more than okay!  More than okay?  Yes, we will be having cookies for breakfast 'till they run out!

-then I threw together a quick vegetable-italian type soup.  I chopped up any fresh veggies we had, tossed in some barley and some herbs, my favorite vegan stock base and let simmer.  A bit before we ate I tossed in some pasta and cabbage.  It was pretty decent and very healthy.

Yum!
