Rummage Sale Goodness.

My mother and I got lost looking for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and were lucky enough to end up at a church Rummage Sale.  Did she plan that??  Probably not since I was driving our work truck in 95 degree heat (a record for our area!) in a crowded town with mom and baby next to me.  It was a little (to say the least) stressful.  But, we got our door (see previous post) AND I got to do some rummage sale shopping!  We spent a total of $4.25 on baby clothes.  That always makes my day!

That Bee costume was .50!  It is double layer thickness from the Gap, I am dying to see her in it this Halloween!

Frugal Friday; Shopping Habitat for Humanity

I just learned that home fixtures can be purchased through Habitat For Humanity.  They actually have stores where home builders (and homeowners) donate items such as used interior or exterior accessories and even new items that had been ordered in the wrong color or size.

It looks as if Habitat accepts most home pieces in good and working order.  We only looked at exterior doors when we were there but I want to go back and check out what else they offer.  What a great resource to use as we fix up our old house before we sell it!!

I was thrilled to find out there was a ReStore just about 30 minutes away from my house.  I went with my mom and we picked out this gently used door for just $45!!  Sure, its wasn't free and maybe I could have found a better deal on Craigslist but we had a HUGE selection to choose from and the staff was very friendly and even put it in the truck for us!!  I just love it!

Find a ReStore near you and fix up your house!!  Its green, its thrifty, it keeps things out of the landfill, it helps build new Habitat houses and its just plain good in every way!

Check out Biblical Womanhood for other Frugal ideas!

88.35 at the Commissary

I hit up the Commissary this week because we were getting very low on groceries, almost bare bones!!  Okay, not really, but we did need groceries!  I got a ton of food and used 36 coupons for a total savings of $47.69!!!  Wow, Im good!  I did spend 88.35, which still keeps me under my $250 monthly budget.

Its kind of hard to tell, but I did get a lot.  There are doubles of many items as well.  I also was able to get a fair amount of organic foods as well as some natural cleaning products for our new home.  (as I will not be using any chemicals there if I can help it!  oops, guess the 2 cases of dish tabs will have to stay here!!  But they were such a deal!)

Cloth Pads, thats right, Menstrual Pads!

Well, my husband thinks I am crazy. First for trying these, second for 'telling the world' (his words!). If you have read my blog before you know that I am a huge cloth fan. I use cloth towels in the kitchen instead of paper towels, cloth diapers and wipes on the babe, cloth grocery bags... so why not on myself?

I have read so much about how much other women really love cloth, it is softer, lack of chemicals results i n a shorter and lighter period, and they are cheaper (or free if you have fabric on hand!). Not even to start with the whole environmental aspect.
If you can get over the gross factor (it took me about 6 months of considering to do so) and just realize we have to deal with this whole period issue no matter what. It is really not going to be much different. I wash diapers anyway so it wont create any extra tasks or even waste any extra water. And I just cannot wait to see how comfortable they really are, all I read is how much women just love them!!

I have done a lot of research and used some really wonderful and easy patterns off this website here , do check it out, at least see how pretty they are! I also was inspired by this great blog To Love Honor and Vacuum, she was less formal on making hers and it just seemed so easy and fun I really had a great time making them! This site here was especially helpful in choosing my fabrics, she also has a lot of great information to share. A great help so I was able to use materials I had on hand. I will have to purchase some snaps to add later as I have read that velcro can be scratchy!

I was hoping to get the chance to use these by today so I could report on how they worked and how comfortable they are but it might be a few days yet! I will be sure to let everyone know how much I love/hate them just as soon as I get that chance!

My lesson: stock up for the flu.

I am the kind of person who likes to have a full pantry, freezer and shelves. Bu,t I guess who doesn't.  I generally keep 'sick' foods on hand such as juice, saltines, applesauce and some mild noodle soups.  When we got hit with the flu last week I was happy to have a large jar of applesauce and crackers on hand.  As I have been otherwise busy(and we have an extra adult living with us right now) our food supply was pretty low, we were out of a few things.

It would have been nice if I hadn't had to send my mother to the grocery store for more items.  She doesn't use coupons but did purchase mostly store brand, thank goodness!  In the future I plan to set aside these mild foods and even write on them to be sure we have plenty the next time the flu hits my house.

When I am able to hit up any of these grocery items at a great deal I will be sure to grab extras for my 'sick' stock.  I encourage you to do the same.  Remember to change out the supply a couple times a year if it doesn't get used!

My 'sick' list;
saltines
veggie noodle soup
apple juice
sprite/7up
ginger ale
apple sauce (a really huge jar)

This week will be bland, boring, easy and hopefully only from the food we have on hand.  We have all had a terrible flu this weekend and our appetites are still no-where near normal.  As we haven't eaten all weekend the fridge is full (minus applesauce!) and our garden is getting overgrown so I will try to stay out of the grocery store this week!

Monday
Canned vegetable soup (throw in some zucchini and peas from the garden)
Toast

Tuesday
Baked Potatoes w/ mild toppings (marj., green onions, steamed broccoli maybe)
Green salad

Wednesday
Pasta Salad w/ lots of veggies(I will make fairly bland if we are still ill)
Boca burgers maybe...

Thursday
Homemade bread
Pasta Bake
Steamed zucchini

Friday
Pizza night
veggie tray

Saturday
Cuban Black beans w/ mango chutney

Natural Cleaning

Ahhh, the wonders of Borax.  I started purchasing this wonderful stuff when I joined the cloth diaper world.  It really works wonders in getting rid of that skunky diaper stink.

Today I thought I would try it in the bathroom.  I dumped some in a bowl, added a little baking soda and some salt for extra abrasion as my tub was beyond dirty with hard water stains.  I used this mixture with a wet sponge and a scrub brush as was amazed at how well it worked.  I think it was just about as good as Soft Scrub.

Added bonus;  my daughter crawled at my feet while I cleaned, no chemical inhalation worries for me!

Go on, Try it!
